The pursuit of love in a cold climate5/13/2023 The Mitford sisters came of age during the Roaring Twenties and wartime in London, and were well known for their beauty, upper-class bohemianism or political allegiances. Her sisters included Lady Diana Mosley Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire and Jessica, who immortalised the Mitford family in her autobiography Hons and Rebels. Nancy Mitford was born in London on November 28 1904, daughter of the second Baron Redesdale, and the eldest of six girls. Love in a Cold Climate is the wickedly funny follow-up to The Pursuit of Love and explores the mystery of sexual attraction. But the consequences of this union no one could quite expect. Groomed for the perfect marriage by her mother, fearsome Lady Montdore, Polly instead scandalizes society by declaring her love for her uncle 'Boy' Dougdale, the Lecherous Lecturer, and promptly eloping to France. Even fabulously fashionable Polly Hampton - with her startling good looks and excellent social connections - is beginning to wilt under the glare. Aren't you thankful evening skirts are long again?'Īh, the dresses! But oh, the monotony of the Season, with its endless run of glittering balls. 'Mine's silver lamé, it smells like a bird cage when it gets hot but I do love it. I call that a dream, so soft and delicious, too.' She rubbed a fold of the skirt against her cheek. Reissued on the 70th anniversary of the first publication of The Pursuit of Love by Hamish Hamilton

Metaphysics book5/13/2023 Book 11 receives relatively little attention-three pages in the introduction, six in the commentary. A lengthy introduction does a good job of connecting book 3 to the rest of the Metaphysics. Madigan also provides a few pages of textual notes that, unlike the rest of the book, presuppose some knowledge of Greek. Like other volumes in the series, this one includes a literal translation followed by a line by line commentary that aims to explore different construals of Aristotle’s arguments and a glossary. Since there is no detailed and thorough study of book 3 in the recent literature, Madigan’s contribution is sorely needed and a worthy addition to the Clarendon Aristotle series. Book 3 has often been read as a merely historical record of that stage in his development when Aristotle personally struggled with Platonism, other philosophies, or his own earlier philosophy. Many of the problems Aristotle sets out here are not addressed explicitly elsewhere in the Metaphysics, their discussion in book 3 is inconclusive, and most seem today of little intrinsic interest on their own. Despite this warning, book 3 and its doublet, book 11.1–2, have received relatively little attention. In the first lines of Metaphysics 3, Aristotle argues that any progress in this discipline hinges on carefully working through the problems peculiar to it, the metaphysical aporiai and he devotes all of book 3 to drawing up these problems.

Rhyming text describes the arrival of a new baby and all of the big brother’s rewarding new duties. Fever Season by Jeanette Keith5/12/2023 Some ministers, politicians, and police fled their constituents, while prostitutes and the poor risked their lives to nurse the sick. The story that Jeanette Keith uncovered is a profound-and never more relevant-account of how a catastrophe inspired reactions both heroic and cowardly. Fever Season chronicles the drama in Memphis from the outbreak in August until the disease ran its course in late October. The city of Memphis, Tennessee, was particularly hard hit: Of the approximately twenty thousand who didn't flee the city, seventeen thousand contracted the fever, and more than five thousand died-the equivalent of a million New Yorkers dying in an epidemic today. Moving up the Mississippi River in the late summer, in the span of just a few months the fever killed more than eighteen thousand people. While the American South had grown to expect a yellow fever breakout almost annually, the 1878 epidemic was without question the worst ever.
